Germany now lets drivers choose custom license plate combinations
New rules now let drivers in Germany pick their own licence plate combinations. The changes came into force on January 1, 2026. From January 5, applications for these custom plates—known as Wunschkennzeichen—can be submitted through the Specialized Public Service Center (SPETSon).
The process begins with a reservation, which can be made online, by phone, or in person. Waiting times for an appointment vary depending on the local authority. In Berlin, for example, the wait is up to two months, while Hamburg offers slots within two weeks.
Once booked, applicants must visit their local vehicle registration office during opening hours. The cost for a standard alphanumeric plate will be either 10 or 15 monthly calculation indices (MCI). However, highly sought-after combinations may carry extra charges. Not all regions are launching the service at the same time. In Landkreis München, applications for the MU prefix will only open from January 19, 2026.
Drivers now have more freedom to personalise their vehicle registration. The system allows any mix of letters and numbers, provided the combination is available. Fees and appointment times will depend on location and demand.
