Nearly 200 new Leopard tanks for the German Armed Forces - Germany orders 123 new Leopard 2 A8 tanks in €3.4B military upgrade
Germany has confirmed plans to expand its tank fleet with 123 newly built Leopard 2 A8 models. The deal, costing over €3.4 billion, marks the first production of these tanks since 1992. The Bundeswehr will use them to replace older units and strengthen its forces in Europe.
The first 18 Leopard 2 A8 tanks will arrive shortly, with another 105 ordered last year. These initial units will undergo testing in 2026 before deployment to Lithuania by 2027. The remaining tanks are scheduled for delivery by 2030, including 18 replacements for those sent to Ukraine.
The new model features improved roof armour, an active protection system, and reinforced plating. These upgrades make it essential for rapid military operations. Alongside the PzH 2000 A4 howitzer, the Leopard 2 A8 is considered vital for future land combat readiness.
Germany’s defence ministry plans to request funding for an additional 75 Leopard tanks next year. The current order is financed through a debt-backed special defence fund. Other nations, including Croatia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the Czech Republic, have also placed orders for the same model.
By 2030, the Bundeswehr will have nearly 200 new Leopard tanks in service. The first units will reinforce NATO’s eastern flank in Lithuania. The programme reflects Germany’s commitment to modernising its armoured forces.
