Germany Plans Major Military Expansion Amid Ukraine War Pressures
The German government is bolstering its military forces in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has reached a compromise with parliamentary groups to expand the Bundeswehr, potentially introducing 'contingency conscription' if volunteer numbers fall short.
The expansion plan aims to increase active-duty soldiers from 180,000 to 260,000 by 2031, and reservists from 50,000 to 200,000. To encourage volunteering, the Bundeswehr is offering €2,600 gross per month, with additional bonuses for longer service commitments.
Starting next year, military screening will be mandatory for all young men born on or after January 1, 2008. A questionnaire will also be sent to all 18-year-old men and women, with completion mandatory for men. Women may choose to complete it voluntarily. If these measures prove insufficient, the Bundestag may introduce 'contingency conscription' using a lottery system.
The German military expansion is a significant step in response to the evolving security landscape. The new measures aim to attract more volunteers and ensure the Bundeswehr's readiness. However, the potential introduction of 'contingency conscription' remains a contentious issue.
