Reiche and Pistorius consult with defense industry about production expansion - Germany pushes defence industry to accelerate arms production for Bundeswehr
German ministers are set to meet with defence industry leaders this week to push for faster arms production. Economy Minister Katherina Reiche and Defence Minister Boris Pistorius will attend the talks on Thursday. The focus will be on boosting manufacturing for the Bundeswehr and speeding up deliveries.
The meeting forms part of the Security and Defence Industry Dialogue (SVI), a platform aimed at strengthening cooperation between the military and private sector. Officials want to remove bottlenecks in production and streamline how equipment reaches the armed forces.
In December, the Economy Ministry introduced *SVI Connect*, an initiative designed to improve ties between civilian industries and defence manufacturers. The move reflects growing pressure to expand Germany's military capabilities. While exact production figures remain unclear, global demand for heavy weapons has risen sharply since 2022. Ukraine has become a major buyer of German arms, though no specific output numbers for domestic manufacturing have been released.
Thursday's discussions will seek concrete steps to scale up defence production. The government's push comes as international conflicts drive higher demand for military hardware. Faster expansion of the industry could directly impact the Bundeswehr's readiness and supply chains.
