Germany rethinks civic service to bolster civil protection and resilience

The Protestant Church in Germany (EKD) has called for a broader concept of civic service, moving beyond military aspects to include civil protection and societal resilience. Meanwhile, Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) has weighed in on the debate surrounding the new military service, advocating for a stronger emphasis on civil protection.

The EKD has stressed the importance of voluntary service in areas such as civil defense, critical infrastructure protection, and fostering social cohesion. This, they believe, will contribute to a more comprehensive civic service that benefits society as a whole.

Minister Schuster has proposed that alternative military service could be repurposed to mobilize thousands more personnel each year for civil protection. This, he argues, would strengthen Germany's resilience against various threats, from natural disasters to cyber attacks.

The EKD's advocacy for a more inclusive civic service and Minister Schuster's call for a stronger focus on civil protection in the military service debate highlight the growing recognition of the importance of civil protection and societal resilience in Germany.
