Germany Revives Mandatory Military Checks for 9,000 Young Men in Saxony-Anhalt
In 2026, over 9,000 young men across Saxony-Anhalt will receive mandatory summons from the German Bundeswehr. The process includes a compulsory medical examination and questionnaire, though military service itself remains voluntary. Among those affected are 925 young men from Halle, all born in 2008.
The Bundeswehr has begun contacting 18-year-old males in Saxony-Anhalt as part of its latest recruitment drive. A total of 9,072 young men in the region, including 925 from Halle, will be required to complete a questionnaire and attend a medical assessment. While conscription is no longer mandatory, the examination itself is compulsory for all eligible males.
The process will determine physical and mental fitness for military service. Those who pass may choose to join the Bundeswehr or pursue alternative paths. The mandatory checks mark the first step in a renewed focus on national defence recruitment.
