Economic Minister Reiche Embarks on Overseas Trip to Gulf Region - Germany Strengthens Gulf Economic Ties Amid Global Tensions

German Federal Minister for Economy and Energy, Katherina Reiche, has begun a diplomatic mission to the Gulf region. Accompanied by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s personal envoy for investment, Martin Blessing, Reiche aims to strengthen Germany's strategic partnerships amidst global tensions.

Reiche, a CDU politician born in 1973, previously served as CEO of Westenergie and Parliamentary State Secretary in the Environment and Transport ministries. She took office on May 6, 2025, in the cabinet of Friedrich Merz.

Germany's trade with the Gulf region is substantial. Last year, exports to the UAE reached €9.7 billion, with imports valued at nearly €2 billion. Key German exports include automobiles, machinery, electrical equipment, and pharmaceutical and chemical products. Meanwhile, imports from Gulf states are largely fossil fuels, with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) shipments on the rise. The UAE also plays a significant role in the global trade of precious stones and metals.

Reiche's visit comes as Germany prioritizes economic pragmatism, reforms, and investment-friendly policies. The country maintains significant trade surpluses with both the UAE and Qatar, which exports almost exclusively crude oil and natural gas.

Reiche's trip to the Gulf region underscores Germany's commitment to fostering economic ties and strategic partnerships in the face of geopolitical challenges. Her visit seeks to build on existing trade relations and explore new opportunities for cooperation.
