Germany strengthens police response to domestic violence and mental health emergencies

The Interior Ministers’ Conference (IMK) has taken significant steps to tackle domestic violence and improve police response to mental health crises, according to the Lower Saxony Police Union (DPolG). The union praises the decisions made at the conference, highlighting the introduction of electronic monitoring for domestic violence cases and the emphasis on violence against women.

The DPolG Lower Saxony welcomes the IMK's decision to introduce electronic monitoring, following the Spanish model, for domestic violence cases. This move is seen as a significant step to protect victims and strengthen police and public order laws.

In mental health crises, the union advocates for police intervention to be a last resort, with preventive measures bolstered. The IMK has called for an 'Integrated Risk Management' approach, fostering stronger collaboration between security authorities and psychiatric facilities. While no concrete measures were decided for specific police units, improvements in handling mental health emergencies are planned, including enhanced cross-agency cooperation.

The DPolG Lower Saxony commends the IMK's comprehensive deliberations and broad consensus on adopted measures. The union expects swift implementation of these resolutions in practice, particularly in revising the Lower Saxony Act on Assistance and Protective Measures for the Mentally Ill (NPsychKG) to make it more workable for police. These steps aim to better protect victims of domestic violence and improve police response to mental health crises.
