Germany strengthens protections for geographical indications in new law

The German parliament, the Bundestag, has approved the Geographical Indications Protection Reform Act. The law, passed on Friday, updates protections for geographical indications in various sectors, including agriculture, food, wine, and spirits. It also introduces a new registration and protection system for these indications in the news sectors, including crafts and industrial products.

The Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection will oversee and protect geographical indications created under the new act. The law transposes EU regulations into German law, expanding the protection of geographical indications. While the bill was supported by the CDU/CSU, SPD, and Greens, the AfD and the Left Party voted against it. The new system will allow for better protection and registration of geographical indications, not just in the agricultural and food sectors, but also in news and industrial products.

The Geographical Indications Protection Reform Act has been passed, strengthening the protection of these indications in Germany. The new law will benefit various sectors, from agriculture to news, by providing a robust registration and protection system. The Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection will ensure the effective implementation and oversight of this new system.
