Germany tests digital vehicle registration via i-Kfz app this week

A pilot scheme for digital vehicle registration certificates starts on Monday. The test phase will run through the i-Kfz app, managed by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Participants will no longer need to carry a physical copy of their registration documents during this period.

Dr. Bernhard Rohleder, CEO of Bitkom, has welcomed the initiative as a major move towards a fully digital mobility system. He argues that digital documents will make processes simpler, reduce paperwork and improve accessibility for vehicle owners.

The pilot phase marks a shift towards digital vehicle administration in Germany. If successful, it could eliminate the need for physical registration papers. The next steps will depend on resolving legal and practical hurdles before wider adoption.
