Germany to assess 340,000 young men—including 56,700 dual nationals—in 2026 military review

Germany will begin assessing around 340,000 young men born in 2008 for military service starting in 2026. Among them, nearly 56,700 hold dual nationality, raising questions about security and loyalty. Officials have highlighted particular concerns regarding Russian dual nationals, with nearly 3,700 potentially affected.

The assessment will cover all German men born in 2008, marking the first major conscription review since the policy’s reinstatement. Of the 56,700 dual nationals, the largest group—around 14,500—holds Turkish nationality. Other notable groups include Poles, Italians, Serbs, Moroccans, and Kazakhs.

The 2026 assessment will determine fitness for service among 340,000 young men, with nearly 56,700 holding a second nationality. Russian dual nationals remain a key focus due to security concerns, while Turkish-Germans form the largest subgroup. The government has stressed that loyalty to Germany applies to all conscripts, no matter their additional nationalities.
