Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt to adopt more aggressive stance against cyberattacks - Germany to launch national drone defense center amid rising aerial threats

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has announced plans to tackle drone threats by establishing a national drone defense center by mid-December. This move comes amidst repeated drone incidents at European airports and military installations, with some linked to Russia's suspected 'shadow fleet'.

Dobrindt revealed that the center will pool expertise from various agencies, including the Federal Police, Federal Criminal Police Office, and state law enforcement. This consolidation aims to strengthen Germany's response to drone threats.

The minister expressed concern about foreign powers using new technologies to pose external threats. He specifically mentioned Russia's suspected shadow fleet, which intelligence suggests is behind some drone sightings over Germany's critical infrastructure. Dobrindt called for a more assertive response to these cyberattacks, proposing a legal framework to enable targeted countermeasures even if the infrastructure is located abroad.

The EU is also working towards establishing an effective drone and air defense system, reflecting the growing concern over these threats across Europe.

With drone incidents on the rise, Germany is set to bolster its defenses with the national drone defense center. Dobrindt's warnings highlight the seriousness of these threats and the need for a coordinated response, both nationally and within the EU.
