Germany’s 2025 election reshapes politics with a CDU-Die Linke coalition
Germany’s federal election on 23 February 2025 saw the CDU/CSU, led by Friedrich Merz, secure victory with 28.6% of the vote. The result followed a record turnout of 83%—the highest since reunification—amid growing concerns about rising autocracy worldwide. A coalition government has now been formed between the CDU/CSU and Die Linke.
The election results placed the CDU/CSU ahead, with the AfD in second at 20.8%. The SPD followed with 16.4%, the Greens with 11.6%, and Die Linke with 8.8%. After negotiations, the CDU/CSU and Die Linke agreed to govern together.
The CDU/CSU and Die Linke coalition will now lead Germany’s next government. The election’s record turnout and the push for digital and economic reforms mark key priorities for the new administration. Observers note that the results reflect public demand for stability and decisive action in uncertain times.
