Rich Minister Proposes Growth Agenda - 'Situation is Serious' - Germany’s ‘Agenda 2030’ Aims to Revive a Struggling Economy with Bold Reforms

Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche has outlined a growth agenda to tackle Germany's economic slowdown. Speaking at a symposium on the social market economy, she called for a comprehensive 'fitness program', dubbed 'Agenda 2030', to restore Germany's global economic standing. The event marked the return of a bust of Ludwig Erhard, the architect of West Germany's economic miracle, to the ministry building.

Reiche painted a stark picture, describing the situation as serious both economically and in terms of security. She warned of Germany's risk of falling behind internationally due to radical upheavals driven by geopolitical shifts and rapid technological change. To regain momentum, she argued for a forward-looking economic strategy that includes rolling back excessive regulation.

She proposed reviewing and eliminating misguided incentives in subsidies and funding programs. Reiche suggested that the state cannot shield citizens and companies from all risks, stressing the need for a balanced approach. She identified domestic and national security, infrastructure, and education as key priorities for the state.

Reiche's proposals come after her predecessor, Robert Habeck, removed the sculpture of Ludwig Erhard from the ministry's foyer two years ago due to protests. With the bust now returned, Reiche's 'Agenda 2030' aims to revitalize Germany's economy, with a focus on growth, security, and social welfare reforms, including raising the retirement age.
