Germany’s animal welfare pork labels face another likely delay beyond 2025

A new delay is likely for Germany’s mandatory animal welfare labelling on fresh pork. The scheme, originally set for March 2023, was already pushed back to August 2025. Now, further postponement is on the table after discussions in the Bundestag on November 21, 2023.

The labelling law was first proposed to help consumers identify pork based on animal welfare standards. But since its initial March 1, 2023, deadline, repeated delays have stalled progress. The Bundestag’s first reading on November 21 saw the CDU/CSU and SPD debate the bill, yet no resolution was reached.

With legal challenges, funding disputes, and industry concerns still unresolved, the labelling system remains in limbo. Breher’s latest warning suggests the August 2025 start date is now unlikely. The next steps depend on further negotiations between lawmakers, farmers, and industry representatives.
