Germany’s Bold Plan for Safer, Cleaner Trains Faces Funding Hurdles by 2026

Germany’s Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder has unveiled three new programmes to improve safety and cleanliness on trains and at stations. Two of these initiatives are set to launch in 2026. However, concerns remain over delays and funding gaps that could hinder progress.

The government’s plans were announced as part of a broader push to modernise rail travel. Yet, according to government sources, Deutsche Bahn has not yet put the minister’s immediate action plans into practice.

The government’s 2026 targets for cleaner, safer trains now face scrutiny. Deutsche Bahn must address operational shortcomings while securing the necessary resources. Without action, the promised improvements risk falling behind schedule.
