Germany’s Bundeswehr 70th Anniversary Celebration Costs Over €550K
A grand ceremony marked the 70th anniversary of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces, with Chancellor Friedrich Merz in attendance. The main event included a public oath-taking and a reception in the Reichstag building. Official figures now show the celebration cost over €550,530.
The ceremony’s total expenses reached at least €550,530, according to preliminary estimates. However, the final bill could rise further. The largest share, €432,265, went toward setting up and dismantling the event infrastructure.
Catering alone accounted for €48,501, with €32,500 spent specifically on the Reichstag reception. Beyond these costs, additional expenses arose from a visual barrier installed for security. This measure led to widespread road closures across central Berlin for an entire week, though its price was not included in the published total.
Chancellor Merz took part in the proceedings, joining military officials and dignitaries. The event highlighted the Bundeswehr’s seven decades of service, with a formal oath-taking as its centrepiece.
The anniversary ceremony has drawn attention for its scale and cost. With setup, catering, and security measures, the total expenditure exceeded half a million euros. The final amount may still increase once all related expenses are accounted for.
