Germany's CDU pushes for sweeping tax reform amid high-earner rate debate

Fritz Güntzler, the CDU's financial policy spokesperson for the conservative Union faction in the Bundestag, has called for greater openness to compromise in the debate over income tax reform.

"If we smooth out the overall tax schedule and reward performance more effectively, we must also be willing to make compromises," Güntzler told the news portal T-Online on Wednesday. His remarks follow Chancellor Friedrich Merz's (CDU) recent signal that he would consider a modest increase in the top rate of tax for high earners.

"The chancellor was absolutely right to emphasize that we need to restructure the entire tax system," Güntzler said. For the Union, he added, the top priority must be providing tangible relief for the broad middle class, which has faced disproportionate burdens in recent years. "Above all, the current debate makes one thing clear: we urgently need a comprehensive, coherent reform of the income tax system—not piecemeal arguments over individual percentage points," he stated.
