Germany’s Chancellor Merz to strengthen India ties with defence and green energy deals

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will visit India in the third week of January 2023 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The trip aims to deepen ties between the two nations, with discussions expected on defence, trade, and green energy cooperation. Both leaders first met in June 2025 during the G7 Summit in Canada.

The visit comes as India and Germany mark key milestones in their relationship. The countries celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties on 7 March 2025. Their Strategic Partnership, launched in 2000, also reaches its 25th anniversary this year. Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC) between the two nations have been held since 2011, ensuring high-level coordination.

A major focus will be defence collaboration. Talks may advance India’s plan to acquire and co-produce six German Type 214 submarines with air-independent propulsion. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is in discussions with Mumbai’s Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders for an estimated $8 billion project. If finalised, the deal would significantly boost India’s naval capabilities.

Beyond defence, both leaders have pledged to expand cooperation in trade, investment, green technology, and education. These areas reflect shared priorities as India modernises its economy and Germany seeks stronger global partnerships.

Merz’s visit could accelerate agreements on submarine production and other strategic projects. The discussions will build on decades of diplomatic engagement while addressing current economic and security needs. Officials from both sides are preparing for concrete outcomes during the high-level meetings.
