Churches Continue to Lose Members in Saxony - Germany's Church Membership Plummets as Saxony Sees Record Exodus
Church membership in Germany continues to decline, with Saxony seeing a sharp drop in numbers last year. Over 10,000 people left the Protestant Church in the region, while the Catholic Diocese of Dresden-Meissen also recorded losses. The trend reflects a wider national pattern, as more than 650,000 Germans formally exited the two major Christian denominations in 2023.
In Saxony, the Protestant Church lost around 17,700 members in 2023, reducing its total to just under 558,000. The Catholic Diocese of Dresden-Meissen saw a smaller but still notable decline of roughly 3,500, leaving its membership at 124,700. Despite the overall drop, Catholic attendance at services in Saxony rose slightly, with 12.5% of members now participating regularly.
Nationally, the Protestant Church recorded around 350,000 departures, while the Catholic Church lost about 307,000 members. The figures include 115,431 Catholics leaving in North Rhine-Westphalia alone, partly linked to ongoing controversies over abuse cases in the Cologne Archdiocese. Across Germany, Catholic membership now stands at 19.2 million, with Protestant regional churches counting roughly 17.4 million adherents.
Bishop Tobias Bilz highlighted the church's continuing role in society, noting that its diaconal institutions remain open to everyone, regardless of faith. He stressed that while membership numbers fall, the church's broader social contributions persist.
The decline in church membership across Saxony and Germany reflects a long-term shift in religious affiliation. With fewer than 558,000 Protestants and 124,700 Catholics now in Saxony, both denominations face shrinking congregations. Nationally, the two major churches have lost over 650,000 members in a single year, signalling ongoing changes in public engagement with organised religion.
