Germany’s Digital Chief Demands Action on Climate-Friendly Tech Policies
Bitkom President Achim Berg has urged German politicians to turn their announcements into concrete actions to support digital applications and business models for environmental sustainability. Berg, who heads the German digital association, emphasized the crucial role of digitization in tackling ecological and social issues while boosting the economy and administration.
Berg called on key figures such as Peter Altmaier (BMWi), Svenja Schulze (BMUV), Andreas Scheuer (BMVI), and Helge Braun from the Federal Chancellery to prioritize digitization. He highlighted several areas where digital technologies can make a significant impact:
- Green Energy: Berg stressed the importance of powering digitization with renewable energy and improving the energy efficiency of data centers.
- Venture Capital: He recommended improving framework conditions for venture and growth capital to foster digital innovations focused on the environment and climate.
- Central Environmental Cloud: Berg proposed creating a central environmental cloud for public access to environmental data, enabling better monitoring and decision-making.
- Education: Berg suggested supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in educating their employees about digitization and sustainability.
Berg acknowledged that while digitization consumes energy and resources, it can be designed in a climate-friendly manner. He pointed to smart grids, smart mobility services, and smart farming as digital technologies with substantial environmental benefits.
With over half of German citizens believing that digitization aids in the fight against climate change, Berg's call for action resonates widely. By setting the right course for digitization, politics can support sustainability and climate protection goals in Germany and Europe, making the most of digital technologies for a greener future.
