Government proposes Felbermayr as 'Economic Experts' - Germany's Economic Council Welcomes Trade Expert Gabriel Felbermayr by 2031
Germany's Council of Economic Experts is set to welcome a new member. Gabriel Felbermayr, a leading trade policy and geoeconomics specialist, has been proposed to fill the vacant seat. His appointment follows the early departure of economist Ulrike Malmendier.
Felbermayr currently heads the Austrian Institute of Economic Research, a role he has held since 2021. Before that, he led the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW Kiel) from 2019. During his time there, his work shaped key debates on trade policy, including analyses of US-China trade conflicts, EU protectionism, and supply chain resilience. He consistently advocated for evidence-based, multilateral approaches.
His research also influenced discussions on European integration. Reports from IfW Kiel under his leadership addressed fiscal union, the NextGenerationEU recovery funds, and post-Brexit trade adjustments. These contributions were particularly notable between 2020 and 2025, as geopolitical tensions rose.
The Council of Economic Experts, Germany's most influential economic policy advisory board, plays a crucial role in guiding national decisions. Felbermayr's term will align with the current legislative period, running until February 28, 2031.
Economic Affairs Minister Katherina Reiche acknowledged Ulrike Malmendier's dedication before her early exit. The government has now moved quickly to fill the position with Felbermayr, a respected voice in trade and European economic policy.
Felbermayr's appointment brings deep expertise in trade, geoeconomics, and European integration to the council. His term will last until 2031, ensuring continuity in economic policy advice during a period of global uncertainty. The government's decision reflects confidence in his ability to guide key discussions in the years ahead.
