Germany’s election race tightens as Union and AfD tie at 27% in polls

A new Politbarometer poll reveals a tight race between Germany’s two leading parties, with the center-right Union bloc and the far-right AfD both at 27 percent in the election polls. The survey, conducted by ZDF from 18 to 20 November 2025, also shows uncertainty over the Union’s internal pension dispute.

In the latest hypothetical election scenario, the Union and AfD share the top spot, each securing 27 percent of voter support. The center-left SPD holds steady at 14 percent, while the Greens remain unchanged at 12 percent. The Left Party would drop to 9 percent if elections were held now.

The deadlock between the Union and AfD suggests a deeply divided electorate. With smaller parties failing to gain ground, the next federal election could hinge on shifts among the top contenders.
