Germany's First County-Level Citizens' Assembly Launches in Marburg-Biedenkopf

The district of Marburg-Biedenkopf is set to launch Germany's first citizens' assembly at the county level. Named Volunteer Forum – Engaged in Dialogue, the initiative aims to strengthen volunteer work and bring generations together. District administrator Jens Womelsdorf sees it as a way to tackle challenges faced by local volunteer groups while fostering democratic culture.

The assembly will gather randomly selected residents, ensuring a wide cross-section of the community takes part. No prior expertise is needed, and organisers are actively encouraging young people aged 16 to 30, as well as those with migration backgrounds, to join. Their role will be to advise the district administrator directly, with discussions held openly and decisions made transparently.

All findings from the forum will be shared with the district council and its committees. These recommendations could shape future policies or administrative actions. Womelsdorf has also committed to reviewing the results personally and providing feedback to every participant. The project reflects a broader push for open, dialogue-based politics. By embedding this forum into local governance, the district hopes to boost social cohesion and make democracy more accessible to all.

The Volunteer Forum marks a new approach to citizen involvement in Marburg-Biedenkopf. Its outcomes will be publicly documented and may influence how the district supports volunteer organisations. Further details, including how to participate, are available at www.our-website.
