Germany's First: Schleswig-Holstein Signs Deal for Islamic Institutions' Integration
Schleswig-Holstein's government has signed a landmark agreement with the Verband der islamischen Kulturzentren Norddeutschland (Association of Islamic Cultural Centers of Northern Germany) to promote Islamic institutions' integration into public life. This deal, a first in Germany, ensures equal recognition for religious communities and benefits both students and employees.
The framework allows Muslim students to take leave on the first day of Ramadan and Eid al-Adha without submitting formal excuses. Employees, however, must still obtain permission from their employers. Education Minister Dorit Stenke hailed this agreement as a significant step towards equal recognition of religious communities.
The agreement supports the inclusion of Islamic religious education in schools, provided there are sufficient student numbers and qualified teachers. It also enables the Northern German Association of Islamic Cultural Centers (VIKZ) to operate educational and cultural facilities and train religious leaders, subject to regulations.
This agreement marks a milestone in Germany's recognition of Islamic communities. It allows for greater integration, supports religious education, and accommodates religious holidays for both students and employees. The government of Schleswig-Holstein and the Verband der islamischen Kulturzentren Norddeutschland have paved the way for a more inclusive society.
