Germany’s Green Party splits over future Olympic bids amid fierce debate

Germany’s Green Party remains deeply divided over potential Olympic bids for 2036, 2040, or 2044. While some members push for hosting opportunities, others—like Berlin’s deputy Green leader—strongly oppose the plans. The debate has exposed sharp contrasts within the party and across different regions.

In late 2021, Berlin’s Greens signed a coalition agreement leaving the door open for an Olympic bid under specific conditions. Now, Deputy Leader Klara Schedlich has criticised the government’s backing of such a move. She accuses the CDU-SPD coalition of reneging on earlier promises and possibly using the Olympics as a political tool. Schedlich has aligned herself with the NOlympia alliance, putting her at odds with Greens in other cities.

The Green Party’s internal divisions highlight the complexity of Germany’s Olympic ambitions. With some leaders pushing for economic and social benefits and others warning of broken promises, the debate is far from settled. The final decision will depend on how these conflicting views are reconciled—or overridden.
