Germany's historic license plate codes could make a dramatic comeback soon

Germany's districts and cities may soon gain more liberty to reinstate historic license plate codes. The Bundesrat has approved a proposal to relax current restrictions, aiming to fortify regional identity. The plan now proceeds to the federal government for final endorsement.

Since 2012, over 300 old regional codes have been reimplemented across the country. Illustrations include NÖ, which resurfaced in Landkreis Donau-Ries on July 10, 2013. Other codes like BUX, MOO, LAA, and WUF have also been debated for revival.

As per current regulations, a district must achieve full independence in vehicle registration before issuing a new code. Hesse has advocated to eliminate these constraints entirely. The Bundesrat's resolution supports this liberalization, though the precise number of states endorsing the change remains uncertain.

The proposal will now be scrutinized by federal authorities. If sanctioned, more historic codes could return to German roads. The transition would grant local areas greater latitude in selecting their license plate identifiers.
