Call for Criminal Acts Online: Raid - Germany's massive raid targets online hate speech after fatal attack

A nationwide crackdown on online hate speech took place across Germany on October 17, 2024. The operation, coordinated by the Bundeskriminalamt, involved all 16 federal states. It followed months of heightened tensions after a fatal knife attack on a police officer in Mannheim on May 31, 2024.

The investigation targeted a man from the Rendsburg-Eckernförde area, accused of publicly inciting criminal acts. Authorities seized his mobile phone under a court-approved search warrant. The suspect allegedly posted a xenophobic and violence-inciting comment in response to a video about the Mannheim attack.

The operation, named Aktionstag gegen Hasspostings, aimed to show suspects the real-world consequences of their online behaviour. It formed part of a broader effort to tackle illegal online content in Germany. While all states participated, no specific regions were highlighted as facing more severe cases than others.

The crackdown sent a clear message about the legal risks of online hate speech. Investigations like this one will continue as authorities monitor digital threats. The operation also reinforced cooperation between federal and state law enforcement agencies.
