Germany's Military Warns of Rising Hybrid Threats, Drones
Germany's Defence Minister, Alexander Dobrindt of the CSU, has addressed the rising threat of hybrid attacks, including drone incursions, and the military's response to these challenges.
Chief of Staff, Carsten Breuer, has warned of an increase in 'hybrid attacks' involving cyber strikes, sabotage, and drone violations over industrial sites and military barracks. He considers the current threat from Russia the most serious in his 40-year career.
Breuer emphasises the importance of avoiding shooting down drones in civilian airspace due to potential collateral damage. Instead, the Bundeswehr is exploring alternative methods such as electronically disrupting drone flight paths, seizing control of them, or capturing them with nets.
Breuer underscores that while the military can provide assistance in drone defence, it has clear limits due to differing mandates. Internal security remains the responsibility of civilian agencies. The Defence Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, is working to address these evolving threats and ensure the safety of Germany's citizens.
