Germany's Minister Urges Fair Play for SMEs in Defense Procurement Reform
Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Germany's Minister for Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism, has spoken out on the importance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups in maintaining the country's defense capabilities. She emphasizes their agility and innovativeness, calling for their inclusion in the reform of the German Armed Forces' procurement system.
Hoffmeister-Kraut supports the recently implemented Bundeswehr Planning and Procurement Acceleration Act (BwPBBG), which expands procurement to include all requirements of the Bundeswehr and promotes innovative solutions. However, she expresses concern about the potential impact of the act on SMEs, start-ups, and new entrants.
To address this, the Minister calls for suitable structures within procurement authorities to facilitate the participation of these groups. She also urges the federal government to maintain fair competition and exercise restraint in applying exceptions to procurement rules.
The Minister's call highlights the need to balance streamlined procurement processes with fair opportunities for SMEs and start-ups. The BwPBBG, while promoting innovation, must also ensure these businesses can effectively compete and contribute to Germany's defense capabilities.
