Germany’s Minister Verena Hubertz to Make History with Pregnancy in Office
German Federal Minister for Building, Verena Hubertz, is set to make history in Germany. She is expecting her first child in January, becoming only the third minister in German history to give birth while in office. Hubertz, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), plans to take the full eight weeks of maternity leave after the birth. She will begin her leave in December, following Manuela Schwesig, who was the last minister to become pregnant during her term in 2015. Hubertz has stated that she has no plans to bring her baby to the Bundestag, focusing on her maternal duties during her leave in Germany.
Despite facing online abuse after announcing her pregnancy, Hubertz remains undeterred. She has chosen not to pursue legal action against the comments, as they did not constitute death threats. Instead, she is determined to push back against such discussions in the future in Germany.
Verena Hubertz's pregnancy and planned maternity leave mark a significant moment in German political history. Her resilience in the face of online abuse serves as an inspiration. Her leave will begin in December, with her child due in January in Germany.
