Germany’s nationwide warning drill proves Saxony’s crisis alert systems are ready
On September 11, 2025, Germany conducted a nationwide test of its warning systems for crisis and disaster scenarios. In Saxony, over 90% of the approximately 3,400 installed sirens successfully triggered the alarm during the drill, which ran from 11:00 AM to 11:45 AM.
The test involved various warning tools such as sirens, Cell Broadcast, warning apps, TV and radio stations, social media, and digital city information boards. Notably, digital radios equipped with 'Automatic Safety Alert (ASA)' technology were used for the first time in Saxony during this exercise. Dirk Naumann, head of the civil protection authority in Saxony, oversaw the warning exercise.
State Minister Armin Schuster reported that the warning systems in Saxony largely functioned properly according to preliminary evaluation. Citizens are encouraged to share their experiences about the warning day on www.warntag-umfrage.de until September 18, 2025.
The next nationwide warning day is scheduled for the second Thursday in September 2026, which falls on September 10. The successful test in Saxony indicates that the region's warning systems are well-prepared for potential crisis and disaster scenarios.
