Army Inspector Freuding Calls for More Combat Brigades - Germany's New Army Chief Vows to Fill Gaps by 2029 Amid Russian Threat

The German Army has a new leader. Generalmajor Christian Freuding has taken over from Alfons Mais as the Army Inspector, a role he will combine with his current advisory positions on Germany's support for Ukraine. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has expressed full confidence in Freuding's abilities.

Freuding brings extensive experience to his new role, having previously headed the Planning and Command Staff and the Ukraine Special Staff at the Federal Ministry of Defense. In these positions, he has been advising on Germany's support and coordination for Ukraine amid the Russian invasion, as well as other unspecified countries.

Taking over from Mais, Freuding has emphasized the need to fill gaps and fully equip the army by 2029 to deter potential threats. He considers Russia's military threat by 2029 to be a plausible assessment, not an alarmist one. Pistorius, who considers Freuding the best choice for the position, agrees with this assessment.

Freuding's appointment comes at a critical time, with Germany continuing to support Ukraine and facing potential threats. His experience and assessments will be crucial in shaping the army's future. The Defense Minister's confidence in Freuding signals a clear direction for the German Army.
