Germany’s New Digital Platform Rescues Farmers Amid Labor Crisis

The German Agricultural Contractors Association, led by Erwin Ballis, has launched 'Das Land hilft', a job platform connecting farmers with potential harvest workers. Bitkom, a digital association, supports the initiative. Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner has praised its success.

The platform was launched in response to the shortage of seasonal workers due to the coronavirus crisis, particularly for asparagus and strawberry harvests. It allows farmers and volunteers to find each other quickly through a regional search function. Over 28,000 listings were made on the platform within its first week.

Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder highlighted the importance of digital platforms in addressing real-world challenges posed by the crisis. The platform is a joint effort between the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and the German Agricultural Contractors Association.

The 'Das Land hilft' platform is expected to continue helping farmers find workers during the coronavirus crisis. Its success in the first week demonstrates the potential of digital solutions in addressing agricultural labour shortages.
