Landtag plans memorial for persecuted MPs during the Nazi era - Germany's New Memorial Honors Lawmakers Who Rebuilt Democracy After Nazi Persecution
North Rhine-Westphalia's state parliament is creating a memorial to honour lawmakers who faced Nazi persecution. The project, named Be Human, will recognise those who later helped rebuild democracy after World War II. It is set to open in October, marking the 80th anniversary of the parliament.
The memorial will stand near the entrance to the parliamentary chamber. Its centrepiece is an oak table with an embedded screen, blending traditional woodwork with digital technology. Visitors can interact with a touchscreen to explore the life stories of around 80 post-war legislators.
Many of these politicians were imprisoned or persecuted under the Nazi regime because of their origins, beliefs, or political views. After the war, they played a key role in establishing democratic institutions in the state. Parliament President André Kuper highlighted their contributions, calling them the foundation of today's democratic system.
The project's name, Be Human, reflects its focus on personal histories. The digital memorial book will provide detailed biographies, ensuring their experiences are preserved for future generations.
The memorial's launch in October will coincide with the parliament's 80th anniversary. It will serve as a permanent reminder of the lawmakers' resilience and their efforts to rebuild democracy. The combination of physical craftsmanship and interactive displays aims to engage visitors with this important chapter of history.
