Rhineland-Palatinate ruled out as nuclear waste repository - Germany's Nuclear Waste Repository Hunt Narrows to Northern Regions

The search for Germany's nuclear waste repository has narrowed down to specific regions in the north, while some areas in the south have been ruled out. The Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal (BGE) has reassessed potential sites, leaving only 25 percent of the country's land under consideration.

In northern Germany, several regions remain in the running. These include parts of Lower Saxony like Hannover, Peine, Schaumburg, Diepholz, Osnabrück, and Emsland. However, many of these areas are still awaiting evaluation. Meanwhile, in Hesse, a site near Mannheim is under consideration.

The BGE has classified areas in Rhineland-Palatinate as poorly suited or unsuitable. This includes previously considered regions. The state is now unlikely to host the repository due to geological issues. On the other hand, promising regions include areas in Baden-Württemberg near Freiburg and south of Karlsruhe. Multiple locations close to the Czech border in Bavaria and Saxony have also passed initial screening phases.

The selection process for Germany's nuclear waste repository has significantly narrowed, with only 25 percent of the country's land still under consideration. While northern regions remain in the running, southern states like Rhineland-Palatinate have been largely ruled out. The BGE continues to evaluate potential sites, with promising regions identified in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and Saxony.
