Germany's pharmacy data hub hits major milestone after years of delays
The ABDA's long-planned data hub for pharmacies has reached a key stage in development. After three years of planning, the system is now mostly programmed and ready for testing. The project, originally set for launch in early 2025, will now go live in 2026.
The ABDA first announced its data hub project three years ago. Its goal is to replace the current data panel system used by pharmacies across Germany. Automated data collection from pharmacy management systems was initially planned for the first half of 2025.
A change in technical partners last year shifted the timeline. The ABDA switched from Comline to StackIT, a subsidiary of the Schwarz Group. This move accelerated progress, with programming declared largely complete by 13 March 2026. The next phase involves testing data transmission routes. A small group of pharmacies will trial the connections before wider rollout. Full operations will only begin after the ABDA's general assembly in August, pushing the launch to 2026.
Testing with selected pharmacies will soon confirm the system's reliability. Once approved, the hub will streamline data sharing for thousands of pharmacies. The delay from 2025 to 2026 reflects both technical changes and the need for thorough validation.
