Germany's Pharmacy Sector Set for Major Reform to Boost Drug Access and Preventive Services
A significant reform in the German pharmacy sector is underway, aiming to improve drug availability and expand preventive services. The Verband der Ersatzkassen e.V. (vdek) supports the changes, while also expressing concerns about potential impacts on costs and planning center.
The reform introduces several key changes. Pharmacists will be able to open branch or satellite pharmacies and delegate management, allowing for better coverage, especially in rural areas. This aligns with vdek's goal to ensure quick drug access for all insured persons. Boris von Maydell, vdek's board representative and head of the ambulatory care department, has been involved in these discussions.
The negotiated solution includes a fixed salary and allowance for pharmacists. Additionally, the night and emergency service allowance will increase. However, von Maydell criticizes the new regulation, warning it may undermine health insurance planning and supply security.
The reform also plans to expand vaccination offers in pharmacies for preventive services, further enhancing their role in public health. However, statutory health insurers caution that the expanded exchange possibilities for pharmacists may lead to increased drug costs.
The pharmacy reform aims to improve drug availability and expand preventive services, with vdek's support. However, concerns about potential impacts on costs and planning center remain, as highlighted by vdek's Boris von Maydell and statutory health insurers.
