Germany's Spahn warns of looming refugee crisis amid Iran tensions
Jens Spahn, head of Germany's CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has raised concerns over a possible new refugee crisis. The warning comes as tensions escalate in Iran, where conflict has been ongoing since late February 2026. He urged European leaders to act swiftly to avoid a repeat of the 2015 situation.
Spahn called for an immediate shift in EU migration policy. He emphasised the need for agreements with safe third countries to manage any future influx of refugees. Over 26 million people were already living in war-affected areas of the Middle East, including Iran, before the latest escalation.
He pointed to ongoing talks with Turkey as a model for securing regional cooperation. Such partnerships, he argued, would help Europe prepare for potential displacement caused by the conflict.
The CDU/CSU leader's push for EU-wide action reflects growing unease over the crisis. Without concrete agreements, he warned, Europe risks facing another large-scale refugee situation. The focus now turns to whether member states will adopt his proposed measures.
