Faction Meeting: SPD Plans Multiple Tax Reforms and Wants to Empower Women - Germany’s SPD unveils bold tax reforms and stricter laws to protect women

Germany’s Social Democrats (SPD) have announced plans for major tax and inheritance reforms this year. The party wants to ease the burden on low and middle-income earners while targeting wealthier individuals and luxury assets. At the same time, it is pushing for stronger protections against violence towards women.

The SPD’s tax proposals focus on two key areas: income and inheritance. Under the plans, those with the highest earnings and largest estates would pay more to fund cuts for others. The party also intends to reform property taxes, exempting family homes but imposing higher levies on luxury real estate.

Leading the parliamentary group, Dr. Matthias Miersch has stressed the need for swift action on inheritance tax. The SPD argues that current rules worsen structural inequalities and must be updated.

Alongside financial reforms, the party is prioritising women’s safety. New legal measures would introduce stricter criminal offences to tackle femicide and violence against women. The SPD has described such crimes as a grave injustice requiring urgent attention.

If implemented, the reforms would reshape tax obligations for high earners and property owners. The proposed laws on violence against women would also introduce tougher penalties. The SPD’s agenda now moves to parliamentary debate, where its success will depend on cross-party support.
