Power Outage in Berlin: Fake News About Missing Power Generators - Germany’s THW Delivers 1,700 Generators to Ukraine Without Depleting Reserves
Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) has sent around 1,700 emergency generators to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion. These units were newly purchased specifically for the effort, not taken from existing stocks. The agency also plays a key role in domestic crises, including Berlin’s recent large-scale blackout.
THW maintains a vast reserve of emergency power equipment across Germany. This includes several thousand generators of different sizes and several hundred larger backup systems. These resources can be deployed under mutual aid agreements when requested.
The generators sent to Ukraine were procured at the request of the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Funding came from these ministries, while THW managed the logistics and transport. The agency ensured the units reached Ukraine without drawing from its own operational reserves. THW’s capabilities were also demonstrated during Berlin’s recent power outage. The organisation provided emergency generators from its national stockpile to restore critical services. Such deployments follow official requests and are coordinated through established channels.
The delivery of 1,700 generators to Ukraine highlights THW’s role in both domestic and international emergencies. The agency’s existing reserves remain intact, ensuring readiness for future crises. Requests for support continue to be processed through formal agreements and official channels.
