Germany’s tourism slumps as major current events vanish in 2025

The UEFA European Football Championship 2024, hosted by various cities including Stuttgart, significantly boosted overnight stays of foreign guests in Germany in June 2024. However, a year later, in June 2025, international visitors' stays plummeted due to the lack of major current events like the championship.

In the first half of 2025, German hotels experienced a slight increase in overnight stays, reaching 223.3 million, just 0.1% more than the record in 2024. However, June 2025 saw a notable surge in domestic travelers' stays, up 7.4% to 42.8 million, partly due to the Pentecost school holidays.

In contrast, international guests' overnight stays in June 2025 dropped sharply by 12.7% to 7.6 million. This decline can be attributed to the absence of major current events like the UEFA European Football Championship, which had drawn large numbers of foreign visitors the previous year.

While domestic travel continues to grow, the lack of major international current events in June 2025 led to a significant decrease in overnight stays by foreign guests. Hoteliers and tourism boards may need to focus on attracting domestic travelers or plan for future international events to maintain growth.
