Germany's Unemployment Rises Slightly in August 2025
Unemployment in Germany has risen slightly in August 2025, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) and the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit). The number of unemployed persons increased by 3,000 to 1.79 million, a rise of 8.9 percent compared to the same month last year.
On a monthly basis, the unemployment rate climbed to 4.0 percent, up 0.3 percentage points from August 2024. This increase was driven by a decrease in employment, which fell by 33,000 persons (-0.1 percent) compared to July 2025, leaving approximately 45.8 million people employed in Germany.
However, it's important to note that employment levels have remained stable for the past four months, matching the previous year's figures. When adjusted for seasonal effects, the number of employed persons decreased slightly by 8,000 persons, while the unemployment rate remained steady at 3.7 percent.
In summary, while unemployment has risen slightly in August 2025, employment levels have remained relatively stable compared to the previous year. The German labour market continues to show resilience, with employment figures holding steady despite the slight increase in unemployment.
