Germany's Unity Progresses 35 Years On, but Divisions Remain Among Generations

A recent Deutschland-Monitor study, released in the spring of 2024, explores the political attitudes and social moods of Germans 35 years after the reunification of East and West Germany on October 3rd, 1990. The survey reveals both unity and divisions among Germans, with younger generations born after reunification showing more similar values across the country.

Germans in both eastern and western states strongly agree on key values such as gender equality, equal opportunities, religious tolerance, social justice, hard work, and rejection of political extremism. This consensus is a positive sign for Germany's cultural unity, which remains a work in progress three and a half decades after reunification.

However, significant gaps persist in attitudes towards Europe, environmental policy, and immigration. Younger Germans born after reunification tend to support immigrant integration but emphasize the need for balanced cultural diversity and shared traditions. They also recognize the economic and social benefits of immigration while expressing concerns about law and order and social cohesion. Regarding climate protection policies, younger generations generally show strong support for ambitious climate action, although detailed views specifically by young Germans born after reunification on climate policies were not directly found in the study.

The Deutschland-Monitor study underscores the progress made in unifying German values while highlighting areas where attitudes still diverge. Younger generations, born after reunification, exhibit more similar views across the country, suggesting a convergence in German society. As Germany continues to evolve, understanding these nuances will be crucial for shaping its future.
