Germany’s Uyghur Deportations to China Spark Outrage and Uncertainty in 2025

Germany has expressed concern over Thailand's deportation of Uyghurs to China, with the German Foreign Office issuing a critical statement in February 2025. This comes amidst ongoing German deportations to China, with varying numbers reported each year.

In 2023, Germany deported 59 people to China, while in 2024, the number increased to 68. The government responsible for the highest number of deportations in the first eight months of 2022 is unclear, as no specific data was found. Between January 1 and August 31, 2025, Germany deported 45 individuals to China.

Germany has urged Thailand to ensure the protection of deported Uyghurs in China and called on China to respect the rights of these individuals and their families. Despite these appeals, the German Interior Ministry has not commented on the fate of deportees after repatriation. Notably, a Uyghur woman from Lower Saxony was deported to China in 2025, despite claiming Turkish citizenship.

Germany's deportations to China have fluctuated in recent years, with a total of 162 individuals sent back between 2023 and 2025. While Germany has advocated for the protection of deported Uyghurs, the ultimate fate of these individuals remains uncertain.
