Ghana campaigns for ITU leadership in 2027–2030 elections
Ghana has officially launched its bid for re-election to two key bodies within the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The country is seeking another term on the ITU Council and the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) for 2027–2030. At the centre of this campaign is Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, the Director-General of Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA), who has played a pivotal role in shaping the RRB’s technical decisions since 2023.
Ghana has maintained a long-standing presence in the ITU, joining the organisation in 1957. Since 2002, it has held a continuous seat on the ITU Council, contributing across three major sectors: Radiocommunication, Standardisation, and Development. The NCA, under Fianko’s leadership, has also been an ITU-certified training partner since 2019.
The outcome of Ghana’s re-election bid will determine its role in the ITU’s leadership for the next term. If successful, Fianko will continue to represent Region D on the RRB, while the country will extend its unbroken membership on the ITU Council. The decision rests with ITU member states during the upcoming elections.
