Ghana’s Kpandai election dispute escalates after court orders controversial rerun

A dispute over the Kpandai election has intensified after the Tamale High Court ordered a rerun. The ruling followed reports of electoral irregularities and violence during the December 7 elections. Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has defended the court’s decision while rejecting claims of judicial misconduct.

The court’s verdict came after evidence of significant infractions during the election. In response, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Nyindam, filed a notice of appeal. The appeal cites three grounds for contesting the decision, with a hearing for a stay of execution set for December 17.

Dafeamekpor dismissed accusations that the judicial process lacked transparency. He stressed that all legal procedures were being followed correctly and urged the opposition to respect the rule of law. Instead of criticising the court, he advised the Minority to concentrate on grassroots mobilisation.

The NDC has repeatedly affirmed its commitment to allowing judicial matters to proceed without interference. Dafeamekpor reiterated that the party would abide by the court’s final ruling, regardless of the outcome.

The case remains under judicial review, with the next hearing scheduled for mid-December. The outcome will determine whether the Kpandai election will be rerun as ordered. Both sides continue to prepare their legal arguments while the process unfolds.
