Ghost bike memorial demands safer roads after cyclist's fatal crash in Zwintschöna
A ghost bike has appeared at Friedrichsbad in Zwintschöna, marking the spot where a 64-year-old cyclist died last year. The memorial follows a fatal crash on State Road 167, where the rider collided with a car on 20 June 2025. Campaigners now demand urgent changes to prevent further tragedies.
The accident happened at the intersection of Reideburger Straße and Am Friedrichsbad. The cyclist suffered severe head injuries and died in hospital despite resuscitation attempts. The road currently permits speeds of up to 100 km/h, a limit the cycling advocacy group ADFC calls reckless.
ADFC has placed the white-painted ghost bike as both a memorial and a warning. It is the only such installation in Sachsen-Anhalt to date, highlighting the lack of similar tributes elsewhere in the region. The group accuses the state road authority LSBB of failing to provide safe cycling infrastructure, particularly on busy state roads. In response, ADFC is pushing for a bike lane along State Road 167 to separate cyclists from fast-moving traffic. They also demand an immediate speed reduction to 70 km/h at the crash site. Their long-term goal is Vision Zero—a road system where no one dies or suffers serious injury, with cycling safety at its core.
The ghost bike at Friedrichsbad serves as a stark reminder of the risks cyclists face on high-speed roads. ADFC's calls for lower limits and dedicated lanes aim to stop further fatalities. For now, the memorial remains the only one of its kind in Sachsen-Anhalt.
