Giant Chinese Aircraft's Maiden Flight Successfully Unveils Long-Range Capabilities

The AVIC AG600, also known as the "Kunlong," is a large amphibious aircraft developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). This cutting-edge aircraft has garnered significant attention from the international community due to its unique capabilities and versatile design.

The AG600, the world’s largest amphibious aircraft, boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 38.9 meters in length, 11.7 meters in height, and a wingspan of 38.8 meters. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 53.5 tons and a practical range of 4,500 kilometers (about 2,800 miles), allowing it to respond rapidly over long distances.

The AG600's amphibious design enables it to take off and land on both water and conventional runways. It features a hybrid structure with a conventional airplane upper body combined with a ship-like lower hull and 4-meter-long floats on each wing, ensuring stability on water.

One of the AG600's key capabilities is its belly-mounted water scooping system. In just 20 seconds, it can collect up to 12 tonnes of water while skimming over a water surface such as a lake or reservoir. The aircraft can then drop this water over fire zones within four seconds, covering an area of 3,000 to 4,000 square meters—comparable to the firefighting efforts of 300 firefighters operating hoses for two hours. This makes it an invaluable tool for forest and maritime firefighting missions.

In addition to firefighting, the AG600 is also equipped for search and rescue operations in the open sea. It can operate within a 1,500-kilometer radius and carry up to 50 people, offering significant rapid-response and evacuation capabilities that surpass traditional vessels or smaller aircraft.

AVIC plans to develop modular variants of the AG600 to expand its roles beyond firefighting and rescue. These variants will be used for maritime surveillance, natural resource exploration, and logistical transport to remote islands and reefs, making it a versatile platform for maritime domain operations.

The AG600 is powered by four domestically produced Dongan WJ-6 engines, representing a major technical achievement for China’s civil aviation. It has received production certification from China’s Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), ensuring it meets safety and quality standards for mass production.

The AG600 has already received orders from both domestic and international customers, including government agencies and private companies. Its powerful radar and sensors allow it to detect and track ships, monitor maritime traffic, and protect the country’s exclusive economic zones. It is also used for environmental monitoring, such as monitoring air and water quality.

In summary, the AVIC AG600's specific features—large size and payload, amphibious capability, rapid water scooping and firefighting, significant range and speed, and modular adaptability—make it a powerful platform for maritime patrol, search and rescue, and emergency response in maritime and coastal environments.
