Gießen honors Volga German heritage in centennial cultural celebration

A special event took place in Gießen to mark the 100th anniversary of the Volga German Republic. Organised by the Landsmannschaft of the Germans from Russia and the Interest Group of the Germans from Russia in Hesse, the gathering celebrated the cultural heritage of the region. Notable guests, including former Hesse Minister-President Volker Bouffier and Annette Wetekam, chairwoman of the Hessian state parliament’s subcommittee on expellees, attended the occasion.

The evening began with a talk titled Stalin’s Blooming Garden, delivered by a cultural referent from the Museum for the History of Russian German Culture. Another presentation explored the Idealization and Reality of the Autonomous Republic of the Volga Germans, offering historical insights into the community’s experiences.

The celebration in Gießen brought together music, poetry, and historical reflection. By showcasing traditional songs, literary works, and expert talks, the event underscored the enduring significance of Volga German heritage. Organisers and attendees alike emphasised the need to keep these traditions alive for future generations.
